STEERING COLUMN INTERMEDIATE SHAFT DESCRIPTION
The intermediate shaft consists of an upper (Fig 1) #1 and lower #2 shaft to connect the steering column to the gear box.
LOWER INTERMEDIATE SHAFT REMOVAL
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Lock the steering wheel with the tires in the straight ahead position.
NOTE: The steering column on vehicles with an automatic transmission may not be equipped with an internal locking shaft that allows the ignition key cylinder to be locked with the key. Alternative methods of locking the steering wheel for service will have to be used.
3. Move the coolant bottle to the side out of the way.
4. Remove the lower coupling pinch bolt at the steering gear (Fig 2) #2.
5. Remove the coupler from the gear (Fig 2) #1.
6. Remove the upper pinch bolt (Fig 3) #2 at the upper intermediate shaft #1.
7. Remove the upper coupler (Fig 3) #3 from the upper intermediate shaft #1.
8. Remove the intermediate shaft from the vehicle.
UPPER INTERMEDIATE SHAFT REMOVAL
1. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable.
2. Lock the steering wheel with the tires in the straight ahead position.

3. Remove the bolt (Fig 4) #1 for the upper coupler #2 at the steering column #4.
4. Remove the pinch bolt (Fig 5) #2 at the upper intermediate shaft to lower intermediate shaft coupler #3.
5. Remove the upper coupler (Fig 5) #3 on the lower shaft from the upper intermediate shaft #4.
6. Remove the two nuts (Fig 5) #1 securing the upper intermediate shaft #4 to the cowl and remove the shaft #4.
LOWER INTERMEDIATE SHAFT INSTALLATION
1. Install the intermediate shaft to the vehicle.
2. Install the lower intermediate shaft (Fig 3) #3 to the upper intermediate shaft #1.
3. Install the upper pinch bolt (Fig 3) #2 and tighten the bolt to 49 N.m (36 ft. lbs.).
4. Install the coupler (Fig 2) #1 at the steering gear #2.
5. Install the lower coupler pinch bolt at the steering gear and tighten the bolt to 49 N.m (36 ft. lbs.).
6. Unlock the steering wheel.
7. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
UPPER INTERMEDIATE SHAFT INSTALLATION
1. Install the intermediate shaft (Fig 5) #4 to studs at the cowl.
2. Install the two mounting nuts (Fig 5) #1 and tighten to 13 N.m (115 in. lbs).
3. Install the lower intermediate shaft coupler (Fig 5) #3 to the upper intermediate shaft #4.
4. Install the pinch bolt (Fig 5) #2 and tighten to 49 N.m (36 ft. lbs.).
5. Install the upper shaft coupler (Fig 4) #2 to the steering column #4.
6. Install and tighten the pinch bolt (Fig 4) #1 to 49 N.m (36 ft. lbs.).
7. Unlock the steering wheel.
8. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
